We wish Haas and his new owner the best of luck in their SAR adventures. Haas will be in training to be a Disater Dog with NW Disaster Dogs in Seattle Washington.
Already at his young age, Haas is demonstrating a lot of what is required to be a fantastic SAR/Detection dog. He is testing high in social, food, toy, hunt, prey, tug and retrieve drive. He is utterly fearless when it comes to any/all surfaces and has yet to exhibit any visual, tactile, olfactory or aural sensitivities. He is crazy for water and needs to be supervised when near any water source as he is a natural-born swimmer (where fearless becomes an issue as he heads for the middle of the river/lake!). At his present gawky all-ear, all-paw stage of life, he is demonstrating natural agility and seems aware of foot placement. When not in water he LOVES to burrow into tight places or master anything that can be climbed! Haas has a "bring it on" attitude with life and is not affected at all with new situations or places. He settles quickly, calmly and is a very self-assured puppy.
Haas is being started in live find with a goal of a sustained bark indication. Although the bark is taking a while to develop, the ability to find is not! He is already demonstrating skill in problem solving different scenting situations and has been introduced via puppy problems to wilderness, building and rubble. This boy takes eagerly and quickly to new concepts and has been a kick in the pants so far! Tons of animation and drive and VERY easy to read when in scent. I do not intend on starting him on human remains, however he shows no adversity toward the scent and in fact has successfully located my storage containers used to transport aid to training sites multiple times. He possesses a natural curiosity to hrd that would not be hard to refine and train. I would expect the same for any odor that his handler chooses to train.
Haas is crate broke, leash broke, just about completely house broken and is being raised with dogs and cats in a home environment. He is doing well in allowing routine exam of ears, mouth, body and weekly nail clipping. Motivational and positive foundation training for a future in SAR/Detection is being done on a daily basis. Breeder will guarantee hips and elbows.
Haas is a gorgeous, large boned red sable German Shepherd. Full dentition, deep scissors bite, both testicles firmly in scrotum. Should mature at around 75 pounds. He is parasite free, has been wormed x 3 and has completed his second set of shots. Due to the fact that Montana has a low incidence of heartworm, it has been decided not to start him on preventative at this time.
As I am currently working my own multi-tasked dog and it's at least two years too early to start my next dog, this boy is available to an approved SAR/LE home. He is a forgiving, civil puppy who would be appropriate for a novice handler interested in a single purpose dog, yet possesses the drive and versatility to easily be a multi-tasked dog for the experienced handler.
